Waste should not be buried. It should be transformed.

Sierra Energy was founded in 2004 in Davis, California, around a simple but ambitious idea: that society’s waste could become one of its most valuable resources.

Our mission

Eliminate landfills and generate renewable energy by making waste gasification globally accessible.

Rather than viewing municipal solid waste, biomass and other discarded materials as liabilities destined for landfills, Sierra Energy’s founders envisioned a technology capable of transforming them into clean energy, renewable fuels and reusable materials. That vision became FastOx® gasification: a proprietary process built on proven blast-furnace principles and adapted to the modern challenges of waste management, energy security and decarbonization.

The core concept grew from work by former Kaiser Steel engineers Bruce Claflin and John Jasbinsek, who recognized that blast-furnace technology could do far more than produce steel. Sierra Energy acquired the rights to the technology and, under founder Mike Hart, assembled a multidisciplinary team to turn an industrial concept into a commercially viable platform.

Our story
2004

Founded in Davis

Sierra Energy is created to develop a technology designed to reliably and economically convert a wide range of waste streams into energy.

2009

Research and development

Partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense at the Renewable Energy Testing Center in Sacramento. Successive prototype gasifiers validate the science on MSW, biomass, tires and other difficult materials.

2012–13

Public-sector support

Funding from the U.S. Department of Defense and the California Energy Commission to build a commercial-scale demonstration facility at U.S. Army Garrison Fort Hunter Liggett.

2019

Series A

A $33 million round led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures with Cox, BNP Paribas, Twynam, Formica Ventures and The March Fund.

2018–23

Demonstration

The Fort Hunter Liggett facility logs 1,500 operating hours converting municipal solid waste and waste wood into clean syngas at roughly 80% cold-gas efficiency, producing inert vitrified stone rather than ash.

Today

Commercialization

The Gen 2 gasifier has been fabricated and delivered to Fort Hunter Liggett. Territorial distribution opportunities are offered through the TechPipe™ platform, and project development spans the United States and international markets, including around-the-clock renewable power for data centers.
